Will Coding Still Be Relevant in 2025?
Technology moves fast. In this day and age, this statement is even more true. Technology is developing at a faster rate every single day. On this train of thought, it’s not difficult to argue that technology and the people who work with it are at the cutting edge of our developing society. It’s funny to think then, for example, there were people 100 years ago who held jobs that seemed so futuristic, people thought they were part of science fiction. Now some of these jobs seem old and antiquated. This begs the question, will coding ever lose the relevance it has today? In a few years time, will it lose its edge as the new revolutionary sector in our society?
But not everybody knows coding and writing algorithms has actually been around for a very long time. Albeit, not in its current form. However, it’s argued that AdaLovelace wrote the first computer program back in 1843. Things have changed an awful lot since then, but with coding growing exponentially over the last two decades, will this growth in the industry be sustained for years to come?
What is coding?
So to properly answer the question if coding will still be relevant in 2025, we need to define what we mean by coding. To answer this properly could take a very long time, so we’ll keep it brief. Coding refers to writing commands and information for computers to understand and take action on. This can be in a lot of different forms, whether writing code for how a website should look, or an app for people to use. It can also be to command software on products like 3d printers.
Why would coding be less important in the future?
One of the main arguments around this is that artificial intelligence is getting a lot smarter. At the beginning of the article when we referred to technology exponentially growing over the last few years, artificial intelligence has been one of the driving elements of this.
Up until now, coding has been a middle ground between ourselves and computers. As humans, we have our own languages, however computers never understood this. Computers function in binary, 1s and 0s. Code languages are able to cross the boundary from human language to a form that computers can place into binary commands.
Some people argue that artificial intelligence will improve so drastically that this bridging gap will no longer be needed. The computer will be able to understand human language and convert it to the binary that it needs, without any intermediary.
Will coding still be relevant in 2025?
While we can’t predict the future, the short answer is… yes. Absolutely. This is for a few reasons which we have outlined below. Coding and languages as we know them may well change, there are new developments every week - some of these could completely turn the industry upside down. But for example, if artificial intelligence becomes extremely smart by 2025, unless it is given complete autonomy, there will still be people needed to program the artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence might make certain languages obsolete, but it will most likely mean new elements of languages need to be created. In the short term , a lot of the mundane elements of coding could likely get automated by AI, but this is arguably a good thing though. It will let developers concentrate more on innovation rather than having to spend their time or repetitive tasks.
Because of its growing importance in our society in recent decades, more and more people have been getting into coding for either hobby or career purposes. Now a huge sector within the jobs market, there are millions of people who write and code software around the world. Because of the sheer number of people who write code, the practice will not just disappear and become useless overnight. There will be changes in how code is written in the future, but for now, it is here to stay.
If we imagine ourselves back in past decades, the technology we have today was the stuff of science fiction. For gamers playing on arcade machines, or even consoles, the idea of cloud gaming wouldn’t have been conceivable for many.
